DNS Cache Viewer (DCV) v1.3
DNS Cache Viewer (DCV) v1.3 The purpose of DCV is to allow you to view what Windows has in it's local DNS Cache, and allow you to flush it if you want. Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10 From the author: "Ever wondered what's in your PC's local DNS cache?" "In troubleshooting network issues, it can be useful to see what is in the PC's DNS cache. The DNS system is the internet system that translates names like "michaelburns.net" into the actual IP Address that your PC needs to contact my server. When your PC needs such a translation, it contacts DNS Servers on the internet (usually the ones belonging to your ISP, or contacts your router which acts as a DNS proxy) to get what IP Address a given name translates into. In order to save time for servers/websites that your PC contacts frequently, the PC locally stores a table of names, IP Addresses, expiration times for the info, and other characteristics about the DNS data in the cache. That local table is your PC's DNS Cache. The next time your PC needs to go to a specific website again (say, michaelburns.net), your PC first looks to see if that name & IP Address translation already exists in it's cache. If it does, it saves time by using the info in it's cache rather than do a query to a DNS server (which takes time). There are lots of reasons why the info in the cache may be invalid, ranging from large websites like Google have many IP addresses for the same web name, and they are dynamically allocated to even out traffic flow and so the cache info expires quickly, to nefarious reasons like Adware or Malware is trying to misdirect your PC for their own purposes. If the PC looks ...

EightyOne Sinclair Emulator v1.39
EightyOne Sinclair Emulator v1.39 Emulates the range of ZX home computers made by Sinclair Research Ltd. EightyOne is an emulator for the range of ZX home computers made by Sinclair Research (and their clones) in the 1980s, primarily the ZX80 and ZX81 but also includes the ZX Spectrum models. As well as emulating the machines themselves, various add-on interfaces are supported, including storage devices, hi-res graphics, custom character sets, sound and colour cards. EightyOne was created by Michael D Wynne. Michael is no longer actively developing the emulator, but has made the code open source so that others can continue to extend it with new functionality. This archive collates as many of the original release versions of the emulator as possible, including the source code for them where available. Versions up to 1.0a were produced by Michael, with all later versions created by others. Features Clock accurate emulation of the ZX81 and ZX80 display mechanisms Support for a wide range of add-on interfaces Comprehensive debugger facilities ZXpand Support In real life this add-on for the ZX81 provides 32K of RAM, ZON-X compatible AY sound, and SD card reading support, controlled through a patched ROM. In EightyOne you can enable this board form the hardware menu by checking the ZXpand option. Ensure that wrx hires and zon-x sound are also enabled. Files placed in the folder 'ZXpand_SD_Card' are treated as a virtual SD card. Press Z to get the CAT command in order to list the files on the emulated SD card. CAT "directory name" will show files within a subdirectory. The LOAD command is patched so files will be loaded from the virtual SD card rather than the tape system. On a real ZXpand typing LOAD "" will invoke the tape loader and allow files to be loaded that way. Under EightyOne emulation however ...

Endless Sky v0.10.4
Endless Sky v0.10.4 Open source space exploration, trading, and combat game. Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game similar to the classic Escape Velocity series. Explore other star systems. Earn money by trading, carrying passengers, or completing missions. Use your earnings to buy a better ship or to upgrade the weapons and engines on your current one. Blow up pirates. Take sides in a civil war. Or leave human space behind and hope to find friendly aliens whose culture is more civilized than your own. Endless Sky is free and open source, the product of a growing community of developers and content creators. After years of working a factory job, you have finally saved up enough money to apply for a pilot's license and make a down payment on your very first starship. The backwater planet where you grew up only sells three ship models: a shuttle, a cargo barge, and a light interceptor. Depending on which one you choose, you'll start out earning money by transporting passengers, looking for good trade deals, or perhaps mining asteroids or taking jobs escorting freighter convoys. Of course, you are hoping to save up enough money for a much better ship before long. Human space is a network of two hundred star systems, most of them inhabited, joined by hyperspace links. No one really understands how the hyperdrive works or how the links were initially created, but they say that the strange aliens who live down at the edge of the Rim have other means of travel that allow them to visit other parts of the galaxy. A merchant captain can earn a living by buying cheap food and luxury goods from the poorer parts of the galaxy and trading it for medical supplies or electronics on richer worlds. But you can often earn a better ...

f.lux v4.126
f.lux v4.126 Free program that makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow? Or wake up ready to write down the Next Great Idea, and get blinded by your computer screen? During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun. f.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better. f.lux makes your computer screen look like the room you're in, all the time. When the sun sets, it makes your computer look like your indoor lights. In the morning, it makes things look like sunlight again. Tell f.lux what kind of lighting you have, and where you live. Then forget about it. f.lux will do the rest, automatically. What to do first • Set your location. f.lux works a lot better if it knows when the sun rises and sets. The sun is the brightest light we see every day, so setting this up matters a lot for understanding your circadian timing • Choose your usual wake time. If you wake at a different time each day, you can pick a time on the earlier side • Adjust color settings so it looks as you like it. Just move the big slider to adjust, and ...

Logon Message Editor v1.1
Logon Message Editor v1.1 This is a simple "one trick pony" utility to allow one to easily change the logon message on a Windows system. The Windows logon message is the optional message displayed to users, for which they need to click "OK", to get to the actual login screen. (Often on corporate computers, it displays a legal notice about authorized use.) If the message is blank, then the logon message screen never appears. On large corporate systems, the IT guys would normally remotely control this message. On individual systems, say where you want to remind the kids at home or employees in a small business, you can also do this by manually editing the System Registry. However, that's not only a pain, but even if you are a System Registry editing pro, simple editing of the registry keys results in a message with no line formatting, and to get the message to be line formatted with carriage returns requires editing the registry entry at the binary level. Since I manage some Windows machines used for computer simulations by graduate students, as well as have a home workstation dedicated for work related use, I wrote a small editor to allow me to change this message, with line formatting, quickly and simple without having to deal with the Group Policy editor nor with manually binary editing the System Registry. That program is Logon Message Editor (LOMessage). This program has been mostly used on 64-bit Windows 7 Pro, Enterprise & Ultimate machines, but should work on any version of Windows XP & higher (XP, Vista, 7, 8 & 10). Windows requires that the user trying to edit this message be an Administrator, and the program does look at the users privilege level and if they did not start this program with ...

LTris v1.2.3
LTris v1.2.3 A free Tetris clone that follows the original rules but adds some extras. LTris is a tetris clone. Pieces consisting of four blocks are dropping down and need to be stacked in the playing field so that lines get completed. Pieces can be shifted left/right or rotated. Completed lines get removed. The more lines at once the more score you get. When the next piece cannot be placed on top of the playing field the game ends. There are different game modes (Normal: Regular game starting with an empty playing field. Figures: Each level has a new figure that needs to be cleared, later on new blocks and lines suddenly appear. Multiplayer: You can play either against up to two other human or computer players.) and two game styles (Classic: Follows the classic hardcore rules of NES tetris. Modern: Adds stuff like 7-bag, piece shadow, lock delay, wall kicks, ... for a more casual way to play). Fully portable. No install needed. Click here to visit the author's website.

Lucas Chess v11.17
Lucas Chess v11.17 Play The program has 40 engines prepared to play from the start, and with very different levels, from 0 to 3300 elo. This list of engines is not closed and you can add other ones with the only limitation that they use the UCI protocol. The game can be set, limiting the depth of analysis of the motor or the time used to think, or by modifying the way in which it decides. You can also choose the opening, or start in a certain position, or that the engine uses a book of openings or more or less aid. Younger children will be able to begin their apprenticeship with special engines that know little more than moving the pieces, and this will enable them to win against the engines from the very beginning. Train You have an extensive list of trainings with which to try to improve your chess: Training positions Play like a grandmaster Training mates Find best move Resistance Test Your daily test Learn tactics by repetition Learn openings by repetition Training with a book Long-term trainings Training on a map Transsiberian Railway Expeditions to the Everest Turn on the lights The Washing Machine Resources for zebras Check your memory on a chessboard Find all moves Becoming a knight tamer Moves between two positions Determine your calculating power Learn a game The board at a glance Compete In Lucas Chess there are ...

Network Drive Control (NDC) v1.56
Network Drive Control (NDC) v1.56 Authors description: "Have Windows default mapping of network drives be network dependent, similar to how the Windows default printer can be set to be network dependent." "Network Drive Control (NDC) for Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 10, both 32-bit and 64-bit, is an example of a utility I wrote to solve a frustrating problem I frequently encountered, namely wanting my network servers, both at work and home, mapped to Windows drives in a network specific manner. While one can tell Windows to try to map all of the drives at logon, I didn't like the long delays waiting for the time outs of the drive mapping for the networks that are not connected. (i.e. Waiting for the mapping of the home network drives to timeout when on my work network, and vice versa.) So I wrote my own utility which would examine the network environment after I logged in, and based on what network it found itself on, it would only attempt to map those drives it knew were on that network. Basically, I wanted the map network drives on login to function equivalently to the way the Windows 7 "default printer" did by being network specific. (Start → Devices and Printers → Manage Default Printers) The short of it is I wrote a modular program to do just that, and hence Network Drive Control was born." "Network Drive Control allows you to configure the automatic mapping of network drives when you logon based on the network(s) to which you are connected. An example would be to have your laptop automatically connect and map one set of network drives when at home, and another set of network drives when at work or school, and none if it detects that the PC is connected to a network where no ...

Network Printer Control (NPC) v1.15
Network Printer Control (NPC) v1.15 The purpose of NPC is to allow you to explicitly set the Windows 8/10 default printers by network name, just like you could with Windows 7. From the author: "Network Printer Control (NPC) for Windows 8 and 10, both 32-bit and 64-bit, is an example of a utility I wrote to solve a problem I found myself dealing with. In this case, when I upgraded the laptop that I use as my main home and work machine from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro, I suddenly found that the way Windows 10 (and Windows 8, apparently) managed the default printer stank. Really stank. Under Windows 7 ( "Device and Printers -> Printers and Faxes" -> "Manage default printers"), I had a default printer set for every network that my laptop had to encounter at my house, my work, and the other places I used the laptop on a regular basis. Windows 10 wiped that out, and replaced it with "Let Windows manage my default printer", which behaves differently in one important and annoying way - it switches the default printer it associates with a given network to the last printer used on that network instead of keeping the same default even if you occasionally use another printer. In other words, if you mostly use a specific printer when on a specific network, you probably want that one to be the default all of the time. But under the new Windows 8/10 scheme, if you need to use another printer, the act of using that other printer changes the default associated with that network. (This is the kind of thing that makes you wonder if anyone at Microsoft actually uses Windows.)" "The bottom line is I wrote Network Printer Control to give me the old default printer ...

TREK v3.0
TREK v3.0 This is a classic version of the old program TREK, inspired originally by the 1960's TV show Star Trek. From the author: "The original MS-BASIC version of this specific DOS implementation was written by me in graduate school in 1983 to emulate the FORTRAN version of Super Star Trek that ran on our lab PDP-11/34. That PDP-11/34 FORTRAN version of Super Star Trek was written around 1975, I believe by David Matuszek & Paul Reynolds with modifications by Don Smith." "Being often in a low-temperature physics lab overnight nursing a He3-He4 dilution fridge, He3 cryostat, or He4 cryostat, I often had too much time on my hands in between moments of sheer terror. During those boring times, I rewrote my MS-BASIC version of TREK, greatly expanding it's capabilities and sophistication in the 1980's. I converted it to Quick Basic 4.5 somewhere along the way, with the final Quick Basic version written in 1991. That version, v3.0, is about 3000 lines of code." "This is that version, with its expanded capabilities." "That version produces the file TREK.EXE. It encompasses the original 1960's Star Trek universe ("Original Series" or OS), or the 1980's Star Trek Next Generation (NG) universe. It also operates in real time, so that if you do nothing, your enemies (Kingons or NG Ferengi) are still able to attack you, and there are other entities (OS Berserker "planet killers" or NG Borg) which will chase after you across the galaxy if you irritate them." "You can dock at Star Bases to repair and refuel, and if a planet has dilithium crystals, you can transport down (if the transporter is working) and refuel that way. You can abuse the warp drive to time warp, as well as sometimes time warp if you hit a black hole. Black holes can also absorb photon ...

wikidPad v2.2
wikidPad v2.2 A Wiki-like notebook for storing your thoughts, ideas, todo lists, contacts, or anything else you can think of to write down. What makes wikidPad different from other notepad applications is the ease with which you can cross-link your information. Links in a wiki are created by typing in WikiWords. A WikiWord is any mixed case word typed into the editor. TodoList or JohnDoe are example WikiWords. The term wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian, and wikis are all about quickly linking your information together. Wikis are not a new concept, in fact there are many web based wiki servers available. wikidPad is a real-time wiki wikidPad is not a web server, or application server, or groupware solution. wikidPad is a standalone notepad like application, albeit notepad on steroids. wikidPad is like an IDE for your thoughts. IDE for your thoughts Software developers have grown accustomed to certain features from their integrated development environment that make their jobs easier. Features like auto-completion, outline views, incremental search, easy source code navigation. IDE's that provide these features can greatly increase developer productivity. wikidPad attempts to utilize some of these features to address the problem of personal information management. Personal Information Management How do you manage all of the random bits of information in your personal and professional life? Word documents, text files, Microsoft Outlook folders/notes. If you're an expert user maybe you have a weblog, or a personal database, or possibly an outlining application. Where do you track your wifes favorite food, your bosses kids names, your personal todo list, the name of the movie you just read a review of, the name of the book a friend recommended. wikidPad was created to address this issue of personal information management. It provides a place to manage the massive amounts of information you have stuffed in your head, ...
